During the Christmas break, between eating, drinking, and more eating, I spent some time on YouTube and I really enjoyed all the 2019 recap videos of girls talking about their beauty and fashion favorites. However, I equally loved them presenting their worst purchases of the year because sometimes, I find it quite refreshing to disrupt the cotton candy Instagram world and hear about people who don’t like something and why. Plus at the end of the day, those videos and blog posts are the most informative as they give you all the details about designer pieces you may be planning to buy – and spending a bunch of money on. Luckily, I don’t have any bad designer purchases to share with you, but 2019 saw a few trends I’m happy to say goodbye to now:
Cycling shorts
Nobody needed those in the first place. I have to admit that they did look good on all those fashion girls who used to style them up with blazers and chunky sneakers (we’ll get to that) or the infamous Bottega sandals, but us mortals? Nope. I’m glad I didn’t jump on that bandwagon, because I knew in advance the 90s sportswear wouldn’t suit my style.
What to wear instead: Bermuda shorts will be having a huge comeback in 2020, plus you’re never wrong with a pair of classic white cotton shorts!
Micro bags
I’m glad the impractical, teeny tiny handbags will be off the fashion menu in 2020, because they just weren’t for me. Firstly, I’m this girl who carries half of her possessions around every day, that’s why I can’t deal with a handbag that provides space for… what? A mini tampon? A €5 note? One AirPod? And secondly, as the chaotic person I am sometimes, I guarantee you I could lose my miniature bag in the blink of an eye.
What to wear instead: If you love your statement handbags and think fashion must dare to be impractical anyway, opt for the iconic retro style pouch that Bottega brought us. And for those of us with a more classic style: the crossbody bag isn’t going anywhere!
Dad sneakers
This trend I actually tried out for me, however, I didn’t fully embrace it since I have rather large feet and felt that the chunky trainers added to that. I did buy several pairs of sneakers with a thicker sole that hence are incredibly comfortable, but I think in a more narrow sense, they wouldn’t be labelled as Dad sneakers. To be quite frank, some of the trendy footwear pieces were just ugly, so I’m not sad to see them go!
What to wear instead: After the OTT ugly sneaker trend, 2020 brings back the plain white trainer which I love, because they’re so easy to wear and go with everything, even a wedding dress! To be ultra trendy with your sneakers in 2020, opt for platform soles. Not only will they give you a height boost, but be super comfy, too.
Tie Dye
Did anyone actually wear this? It might be due to my filter bubble, but in my Instagram feed I don’t remember a single girl dressed in tie dye since it had been proclaimed one of the biggest trends in 2019. And to be honest: it really isn’t the prettiest pattern on the planet, is it?
What to wear instead: JLo’s surprise appearance on the Versace runway is something the fashion world is still talking about, and I bet you still know what she was wearing: tropical print. Go for palms, peacocks, and parrots to inject 2020’s pattern trend into your wardrobe!

4 Modetrends von 2019, die vorbei sind – und was wir jetzt stattdessen tragen
Während der Weihnachtspause, zwischen Essen, Trinken und noch mehr Essen, habe ich einige Zeit auf YouTube verbracht. Besonders gut haben mir die 2019 Favorites und die „Best and worst purchases of last year“ gefallen – solche Videos sind nicht nur unterhaltsam, sondern es ist auch spannend zu sehen, was den Mädels nicht gefällt und warum und damit die heile pinke Instagram-Welt mal etwas aufzulockern. Und am Ende des Tages helfen genau diese Infos uns allen weiter, wenn wir selbst überlegen ein bestimmtes (Designer) Piece zu kaufen und dafür eine Stange Geld auszugeben. Glücklicherweise habe ich 2019 keine schlechten Designer-Käufe getätigt, aber es gibt zum Jahreswechsel ein paar Modetrends, zu denen ich gerne Tschüss sage:
Radlerhosen
Niemand, wirklich niemand hat darauf gewartet. Zugegebenermaßen sahen sie an den Modemädchen auf Instagram, die sie mit Blazer und klobigen Sneakern (dazu kommen wir noch) oder den berühmt-berüchtigten Bottega-Sandalen kombinierten, ziemlich cool aus, aber so für uns Normalsterbliche? Nein danke. Ich bin froh, dass ich auf diesen Zug nicht aufgesprungen bin, denn beim 90er Sport-Style wusste ich schon vorher, dass er nicht zu mir passt.
Was wir stattdessen jetzt tragen: Bermuda-Shorts kommen 2020 zurück. Darüber hianus liegst du mit klassischen weißen Baumwoll-Shorts immer richtig!
Mikro-Handtaschen
Ich bin froh, dass die unpraktischen, mini-winzigen Taschen 2020 nicht mehr auf dem Fashion-Menü stehen, denn sie waren wirklich nichts für mich. Zum einen bin ich diejenige, die immer ihren halben Hausstand dabei hat und deswegen nicht mit einer Tasche klarkommt, die Platz bietet für… ja, was eigentlich? Einen Mini-Tampon? Einen 5€-Schein? Einen AirPod? Zweitens geht es bei mir auch gerne mal chaotisch zu und ich garantiere dir, ich würde die Miniatur-Handtasche da leicht verlieren.
Was wir stattdessen jetzt tragen: Wenn du Taschen liebst, die ein Statement setzen und der Meinung bist, Mode muss sich trauen dürfen unpraktisch zu sein, dann ist der Retro-Clutch Trend etwas für dich. Bottega hat’s vorgemacht! Für alle mit klassischerem Stil gilt: auch die Crossbody Bag bleibt uns wohl noch lange erhalten.
Dad Sneaker
An diesen Trend habe ich mich tatsächlich herangewagt, mich jedoch nicht komplett darauf eingelassen, denn mit Größe 41 hatte ich das Gefühl, die klobigen Sneakers schmeicheln meinen Füßen nicht unbedingt. Ich habe allerdings mehrere Paare Turnschuhe mit dickerer Sohle gekauft, die sich wahnsinnig bequem laufen, im engeren Sinne aber wohl keine „Dad Sneaker“ sind. Offen gestanden fand ich die meisten hässlichen Sneaker wie der Name schon sagt nicht sonderlich attraktiv und bin deswegen nicht traurig, dass der Schuhtrend uns 2020 verlässt.
Was wir stattdessen jetzt tragen: Nachdem die unförmigen Treter einfach etwas drüber waren, kehren wir dieses Jahr zu den Basics zurück. 2020 steht der schlichte weiße Sneaker im Vordergrund und das begeistert mich, denn er ist nicht nur wie im Schlaf kombinierbar, sondern passt auch zu allem und jeden, sogar zu einem Hochzeitskleid! Darf es für die Turnschuhe dann doch ein höherer Trendfaktor sein, greif zu Plateau-Sneakers. Ein paar Zentimeter mehr und ein Plus an Bequemlichkeit sind dir damit auch sicher.
Batik
Hat das überhaupt jemand getragen? Vielleicht liegt’s an meiner Filter Bubble, aber in meinem Instagram-Feed kann ich mich an niemanden erinnern, der Batik kombinierte, seit es als einer der größten Trends 2019 verkündet wurde. Aber mal ehrlich: Batik ist nicht das schönste Muster auf dem Planeten, oder?
Was wir stattdessen jetzt tragen: Die Fashion-Welt redet noch immer über J.Los Überraschungsauftritt auf dem Versace-Catwalk, und bestimmt hast du auch noch vor Augen, was sie trug: tropischen Print. Palmen, Pfauen und Papageien sind der Dreiklang, der 2020 die Mustertrends bestimmt.
