Elegant, feminin, klassisch: so beschreibe ich meinen Stil in drei Worten. Das klingt auch etwas nach der Mode aus den 40ern und 50ern, oder? Mit ihren femininen Schnitten, eleganten Details und zeitlosen Accessoires lassen sich diese Epochen immer wieder in aktuellen Outfits aufgreifen. Gleichzeitig surfe ich gerne auf der Trendwelle und ein kompletter Vintage-Kleiderschrank wäre mir zu viel. Auch bin ich niemand, der auf Flohmärkten Omis Lieblingskleider ausgräbt. Mein Ziel ist ein Stil, der sich Inspiration in vergangenen Jahrzehnten sucht, aber trotzdem modern und jung bleibt. “Aesthetics” wie Cottagecore oder Dark Academia, die sich beide stark an Vintage-Mode orientieren, steuern in genau diese Richtung. Das Geheimnis ist, aktuelle Pieces mit nostalgischem Einschlag zu finden und Vergangenheit mit Gegenwart stilvoll zu verknüpfen – so geht’s:
Gedeckte und natürliche Farben
Vintage-Vibes schaffst du bereits mit der richtigen Farbpalette. Während in den 40er Jahren dunkle, organische Erdtöne vorherrschen, waren die Fünfziger und Sechziger bunt – schließlich gab es das Ende des Krieges und das Wirtschaftswachstum zu feiern. Denken wir heute an Retro-Fashion, haben wir – glaube ich – alle einen Pastell-Sepia-Filter vor unserem inneren Auge. Also: erdige Nuancen oder gedämpfte Töne ohne starke Farbakzente stellen die Weichen in Richtung Nostalgie-Mode. Bei Prints kannst du auf ausgewaschene oder kleine Blumenmuster, Vichy und Hahnentritt, beige-braune Karomuster und natürlich Polka Dots setzen.
Sanduhr-Silhouette
Vintage-Stil bedeutet für mich immer: unterstreiche deine weibliche Seite, ohne plakativ zu sein. Weit schwingende Röcke in Knie- oder Wadenlänge, eine in Szene gesetzte Taille, ein dezent betontes Dekolleté – diese Style-Elemente sind zeitlos und einfach mit Teilen umzusetzen, die heute im Laden hängen. Midiröcke liegen sogar im Trend, insbesondere im Herbst/Winter 2021/22. Ebenso angesagt: weite fließende Hosen. Im Marlene-Schnitt mit hoher Taille und Bügelfalte zahlen sie absolut auf den Vintage Vibe ein! Gleiches gilt für klassische Zigarettenhosen. Neben den Trendteilen kannst du deinen Look mit Details noch etwas moderner gestalten, etwa mit einem aktuellen Designer-Gürtel in der Taille, Spaghetti-Trägern statt langen Ärmeln oder einem schicken Spitzen-Bralette, das unter der Bluse hervorblitzt.

Knöpfe, Kragen und andere Kleinigkeiten
Stichwort Details: Die Feinheiten machen ein Outfit oft aus – insbesondere, wenn es nur ein Hauch Retro-Chic sein soll. Knöpfe in Perlmutt- oder Schildplatt-Optik, mit Stoff bezogen oder aus nicht-glänzendem Metall versprühen im Gegensatz zum Reißverschluss eine Prise nostalgisches Flair. Am Gürtel darf es ein Schleifchen sein, an Socken ein Rüschenbündchen. Die klassisch-schicke Mode verkörpert der herkömmlicher (Blusen-)Kragen am besten, doch auch Bubi- und Peter Pan-Kragen passen dazu. Momentan sind vor allem letztere wieder im Kommen, entweder an Oberteilen oder als einzelner Kragen zum Binden. Mit weiter Jeans oder Minirock kombiniert passt der Look ins Jahr 2021.

Kommen wir zur Königsdisziplin: Accessoires! Stilecht ist zarter Schmuck in (alt-)silber oder gold, gerne mit Anhängern wie Medaillons oder an Ringen mit gefassten Steinen. Perlen sind aus Omas Schmuckkästchen auf gar keinen Fall wegzudenken! Während die Kette mit den Glanzstücken für zeitlosen Chic sorgt, sind Perlen aktuell als Haarreif, als oder an Taschen und auf Kleidungsstücken zu finden. Unser Lieblingsaccessoire Handtasche passt mit Henkel oben, in strukturierter Form statt slouchy bag und als eher kleines Modell bestens zum Vintage Vibe. Top-Tipp: Satchel Bags und alle, die auch nur entfernt an alte Schulranzen erinnern! Beim Material holst du den Look wieder in die Gegenwart – mit Leder in Kroko-Prägung, Stroh, PVC oder gemustertem Stoff. Auch Kopfbedeckungen mit nostalgischem Flair wie Florentiner Strohhüte mit flachem, runden Kopfteil oder Baskenmützen finden sich momentan in den Shops.
Richtige Retro-Accessoires wie Handschuhe oder Hosenträger finde ich schwierig modern zu stylen; vielleicht passen sie aber zu deinem Vintage-Stilmix?
Schuhe: verspielt = Vintage
An den Füßen sind für einen Look mit Vintage-Einschlag verspielte Styles gefragt, seien es klassische Ballerinas mit Schleife, Slingbacks mit oder ohne Absatz, Mary Janes oder Peeptoes. Eine runde oder mandelförmige Spitze ist ebenso zeitlos elegant wie ein kleiner bis mittelhoher (Block-)Absatz – beides komplettiert sowohl moderne als auch Retro-Looks. Als Kontrast zur femininen Silhouette funktioniert klobiges Schuhwerk für einen lässigen Style, wie hier auf Pinterest meisterhaft umgesetzt. Gleichzeitig verleihen spitz zulaufenden Ballerinas, Mules mit eckiger Zehenpartie oder hohe Riemchensandaletten einem Vintage Look coole Eleganz.

How to inject vintage style elements into your modern wardrobe

Elegant, feminine, classic: that’s how I’d describe my style in three words – which could also be used to characterize fashion from the 40s and 50s, don’t you think? Featuring feminine silhouettes, elegant design details and timeless accessories, styles from both decades are easy to incorporate into modern outfits. At the same time, I like to explore and follow trends and wouldn’t want my wardrobe to be filled with Granny’s dresses found at thrift shops and flea markets. My goal is to achieve a style inspired by past fashion eras while still having a modern and youthful vibe to it. Trend aesthetics such as Cottagecore and Dark Academia which both are heavily reminiscent of vintage fashion are doing exactly that. The secret is to find current items with a nostalgic twist and stylishly interlace past and present. Here’s how:
Natural and muted colors
You can easily add a slight vintage vibe to your look by carefully choosing a color palette. While the 1940s were dominated by dark earthy tones, in the 50s and 60s the end of the war and economic growth were celebrated by wearing lots of color. However, when we think of retro fashion today, I think we all have a pastel sepia filter before our inner eye. In a nutshell, earthy shades or muted colors are the perfect base for a nostalgic fashion look. When it comes to prints, washed out florals, gingham, houndstooth, beige or brown check patterns, and of course polka dots, are your go-tos.

Personally, what I love about vintage fashion is how it emphasizes my feminine side without being too revealing or OTT. Flared, twirling skirts that come down to the knee or calf, a cinched-in waist, a flattering yet not plunging neckline – all of these are timeless style elements that you can incorporate into your outfits using garments you’ll find in the shops today. In fact, midi skirts are back on trend going into autumn/winter 2021/22, as well as wide-leg trousers. In a Marlene style with a high waist, fitted around the hips and a crease, they’re absolutely in line with the vintage vibe, as well as cigarette trousers. Apart from wearing trendy items, elevating some of your look’s details will help to make it more modern, for example adding a designer belt, going for spaghetti straps instead of long sleeves, or letting a lace bralette show underneath a translucent blouse.

Buttons, collars, and other details
Speaking of the little things: they can be the finishing touches to your outfit or a little nod to past times if you want to add only a sparkle of vintage style. Buttons in a tortoise shell or mother of pearl design, covered in fabric or made of non-shiny metal radiate a hint of vintage flair as opposed to a zipper. What’s more, you can adorn your belt with a little bow or wear socks sporting a frill hem. In terms of collars, a classic one goes perfectly with a vintage-inspired outfit, but if you want to take things to the next level, opt for a Peter Pan collar. They are super popular right now, whether on garments or as an extra item you can wear on any top you like. Pair the playful collars with baggy jeans or a mini skirt for a 2021 look!

Vintage accessories: little treasures from Granny’s dresser
Choosing the proper jewelry for your vintage-inspired look, you might want to look at dainty pieces in an antique gold or silver color, maybe with pendants like medaillons or (half)precious stones. Pearls of course are a definite must-have for Granny’s jewel box! While a classic pearl necklace conveys more of a timeless chic, at the moment we see pearls on headbands, on bags (or bags made completely out of pearls), and as embellishment on clothing.
When it comes to our favorite accessory – a handbag – go for a rather small, structured one with a top handle to achieve a retro look. A rule of thumb: satchel bags and everything else that even remotely resembles those old leather school bags will do the trick! Use the material to bring your outfit back into today’s fashion by going for a croc-embossed leather, straw, PVC, or a patterned fabric. Hats are big in vintage-inspired style – at the moment, you’ll find straw weather hats or berets hanging in the shops!
Proper retro accessories like glamorous gloves or suspenders are quite hard to style in a modern look in my opinion, however, maybe they’ll go with your vintage-inspired outfit?
Footwear: playful vintage vibes
Shoes with a nostalgic touch are classic ballerina flats with bows, slingbacks with a low or no heel, Mary Jane pumps, or peeptoes. Timelessly elegant almond shaped or round toe caps as well as kitten or medium high heels will work with both modern and retro looks, as well as a mixture. In contrast to the feminine silhouette, a chunky boot or sandal creates a more modern and casual look – I love this gorgeous outfit from Pinterest!
