Samantha aus Sex and the City überwirft sich wegen einer Birkin mit Lucy Liu. Handtaschen strahlen eine unerklärliche Faszination aus, sind gleichzeitig ein bodenständig-praktisches Accessoire und unverzichtbar – ohne Tasche gehe ich fast nie aus dem Haus.
Nur eine einzige Handtasche haben bestimmt die wenigsten Frauen, eine Lieblingstasche sicher die meisten! Du auch? Oder gibt es überhaupt “die eine”, nach der du zu allen Anlässen greifen und sie zu deiner Zweitwohnung machen kannst? Für die Favoritenrolle muss eine Tasche viele verschiedene Kriterien erfüllen: zum persönlichen Stil passen, sich für den individuellen Lifestyle eignen, hochwertig und langlebig sein. Eine gute Handtasche bedeutet ein Investment, entweder groß und klein. Für welche Taschen lohnt es sich?

Dein Stil
Immer wieder wirst du zu deiner Traumtasche greifen, wenn sie zu deiner persönlichen Art, dich zu kleiden, passt. Überlege, wie du meistens unterwegs bist: Sportlich-leger in Sneakers und Denim? Klassisch-elegant in Anzug und Pumps? Feminin-verspielt in Kleidern und Stiefeletten? Deine Alltags-Handtasche ist zwar ein Evergreen im Kleiderschrank, doch langweilig und schlicht muss sie nicht sein. So spiegelt sie deinen persönlichen Stil wider:
Farbe: Welche Farben trägst du häufig und welche Töne passen dazu? Lohnt sich eine Tasche in Kontrastfarbe? Mein Tipp sind – wer hätte es gedacht – neutrale Farben wie schwarz, weiß, beige oder grau. So kombinierst du deine Handtasche mühelos zu allen Outfits.
Hardware: Ist es dir wichtig, alle Metalle in einem Look aufeinander abzustimmen? Dann sollte eine Investment Bag die Metallfarbe widerspiegeln, die du am häufigsten als Schmuck oder als Details wie Reißverschlüsse an Kleidung trägst. Geheimtipp: An manchen Taschen, beispielsweise von Chloé*, findest du gemischte Hardware in Gold- und Silbertönen.

Bei Trend-Taschen wie momentan den Bottega-Designs ist es fraglich, ob sie in 10 Jahren genauso beliebt sein werden. Daher verfolge ich die Strategie, in zeitlose Taschen zu investieren und Taschen-Trends in der erschwinglichen Variante mitzumachen – idealerweise als Secondhand-Kauf. Achte bei der Auswahl deines Bag-Klassikers zum Beispiel auf eine Rechteck- oder Trapezform und vermeide Design-Details, die auf eine bestimmte Saison verweisen.

Dein Lifestyle
Jane Birkin, nach der Hermès später seine ikonische Handtasche benannte, siehst du auf Fotos aus den 60er und 70er Jahren beinahe ausschließlich mit einem runden Korb. Nach ihrer eigenen Aussage war er das einzige Accessoire, in dem sie alle ihre Sachen unterbrachte. Jane hatte also ihre Handtasche perfekt auf ihren Lebensstil abgestimmt. Darauf solltest du achten:
Größe: Wie viel hast du regelmäßig dabei? Wie groß sind deine Everyday Essentials? Wenn deine Antworten “viel” oder “groß” lauten, greife zu einer geräumigen Tasche. Nichts ist schlimmer, als sie mit Gewalt zu schließen und dabei das Material zu beschädigen. Möchtest du einen Laptop mitnehmen oder eine Wasserflasche? Welche Dimensionen hat dein Smartphone oder dein nächstes Smartphone? All das sollte komfortabel hineinpassen.
Gewicht: Deine Dream Bag an sich ist leicht – vermeide mächtige Metalldetails oder schweres Leder. Achte darauf, dass der Tragegurt das Gewicht einer vollen Tasche aushält. Vorsicht bei Kettenriemen: wenn die Handtasche gut gefüllt ist, schneiden sie an der Schulter unangenehm ein.
Organisation: Schätzt du Innen- oder Außenfächer, um den Tascheninhalt zu organisieren? Brauchst du ein extra Plätzchen für deinen Schlüssel oder dein Telefon? Ist dein Traummodell nicht funktional unterteilt, empfiehlt sich ein Tascheneinsatz. Er macht dir das Leben leichter und sorgt dafür, dass die Handtasche in Form bleibt.
Henkel oder Tragegurt: Oft ist es praktisch, die Hände frei zu haben, etwa wenn du Mama bist oder viel mit dem Fahrrad unterwegs. Mit Henkeln wird dein Taschenliebling zum eleganteren Begleiter. Oder soll es ein Rucksack sein? Meine Empfehlung: Suche dir eine Handtasche, die du sowohl crossbody als auch in der Hand tragen kannst. Manche Modelle lassen sich zusätzlich easy in einen Rucksack verwandeln, zum Beispiel die Maestra von Senreve.

Die Qualität
Kesha hat absolut recht! Die Alltags-Handtasche muss nicht sündhaft teuer sein, schließlich lassen sich die Designer ihren Markennamen hoch bezahlen. Wofür sich das Investment lohnt, ist ein handwerklich einwandfrei gearbeitetes Stück aus hochwertigen Materialien mit durchdachtem Design. Eine solche Handtasche darf, finde ich, zwischen 100 und 500 Euro kosten. Denn sie muss alles mitmachen und auch nach Jahren noch hervorragend aussehen. Und das lohnt sich: Nutzt du jahrelang eine qualitative Tasche, sparst du dir das Geld für zehn minderwertige. Dazu braucht es zum einen die richtige Pflege (wie ich meine Ledertaschen in Stand halte, verrate ich hier), zum anderen hilft es, beim Kauf ein paar Punkte zu berücksichtigen:
Material: Eine gut verarbeitete Ledertasche empfehle ich immer; es gibt aber ebenso qualitätvolle vegane Alternativen, beispielsweise von Stella McCartney*. Glatt- oder Saffiano-Leder ist robust und verzeiht Kratzer oder andere Beanspruchungen. Lass die Finger von Wildleder! Das sieht zwar sehr edel aus, ist aber sehr herausfordernd zu pflegen und mag Regen überhaupt nicht.
Verarbeitung: Hochwertig hergestellte Taschen erkennst du daran, dass die Nähte mit starkem Garn und minimalen Einstichlöchern gearbeitet sind, der Reißverschluss leichtgängig läuft und dass kritische Bestandteile wie Griffe, Schlaufen und der Trageriemen verstärkt sind. Nimm dein Traummodell gut unter die Lupe oder recherchiere, wie es sich über die Zeit hinweg schlägt und welche Schwachstellen es hat. Marke: Klar sind Designertaschen exquisit gefertigt und werten jedes Outfit auf. Aber greifen wir Normalsterbliche im Alltag dazu? Ich bin nicht übervorsichtig mit meinen Luxustaschen, aber in meiner Routine ist es mir zu anstrengend, dauernd darauf zu achten. Handbags emanate an inexplicable fascination, but at the same time, they’re a down-to-earth, practical accessory that’s become indispensable – I rarely leave the house without a bag.
Very few women own just one handbag, however, most women have a favorite bag! You too? But wait, is there even “the one” that you can carry for all occasions and that’s fit to make it your second home? To become a favorite, a bag has to meet many different criteria including matching your personal style, being suitable for your individual lifestyle, and being of high quality and durable. Your personal style
You will reach for your dream bag again and again if it matches the way you dress day-to-day. Think about which clothes you pick most frequently: sneakers and denim for a sporty and casual look? A suit and pumps for classic elegance? Dresses and ankle boots for feminine and playful outfits? Your everyday handbag will be a staple in your wardrobe, but it doesn't have to be boring and simple. This is how it will thoroughly complement your personal style:
Colors: Which colors do you wear often and which shades would go well with them? Would you consider a bag in a contrasting color? My tip is to – who would have thought – pick neutral colors such as black, white, beige or gray so that you can easily pair your handbag with all your outfits.
Hardware: Do you care if all the metal details in one look match? If so, go for an investment bag that reflects the one color of metal you wear the most, whether that’s in jewelry or in hardware on clothes such as zippers. Insider tip: On some bags, for example some Chloé* ones, you will find mixed hardware in both yellow gold and silver tones.
Details: Are you the detail-loving type or do you prefer simple, clear designs? Is your handbag meant to be a talking piece in your look or to tone down flashy outfits? My tip: simple elegance is always a good look. And if you like to spice things up, take your handbag to the next style level by attaching scarves or charms or exchanging the shoulder strap for a more detailed one.
Timelessness: Some handbag styles like a Chanel Classic Flap or Hermès Kelly your granddaughter will still wear. I’m not sure if we’ll see bags that are super on trend right now such as the Bottega collections in ten years' time. That's why my strategy is to invest in timeless bags while following bag trends by buying from the high street or looking to purchase them pre-loved. When choosing a bag, in order for it to be timeless, you might want to pick a rectangular or trapezoidal shape and avoid design details that refer to a specific fashion season.

When looking at photos from the 60s and 70s of Jane Birkin, whom Hermès later named their iconic handbag after, you see her almost exclusively carrying a round basket bag. According to her, it was the only accessory she could us in order to have all of her necessities with her. Jane had made her handbag a perfect match for her lifestyle. You should, too and you might want to consider:
Size: How much stuff do you take with you on a regular basis? How bulky are your everyday essentials? If your answers are “a lot” or “big”, opt for a spacious bag. Nothing is worse than having to close it by force and damaging the material in the process. Do you want to take a laptop or a water bottle with you? What are the dimensions of your smartphone or your next smartphone? All these things should fit comfortably into your dream bag.
Weight: The purse itself should be lightweight, so avoid chunky metal details or heavy leather. Make sure that the shoulder strap allows you to carry the bag comfortably even when you fill it with weighty things. Be careful when choosing chain straps as they might dig into your shoulder.
Organization: Do you need inside or outside compartments to organize your bag's contents? Do you want extra space for your keys or your phone? Your dream might not come with several compartments, but don’t worry: a bag insert will do the trick and ensure that your purse keeps its shape.
Top handle or shoulder strap: Whether you’re a mom or you ride your bike a lot or you just want to have your hands free, your ideal bag is one you can wear crossbody. A top handle one is less functional, however, a little more elegant. Or maybe a backpack is a choice that complements your lifestyle? My recommendation is to pick a bag that you can carry both crossbody and in your hand. Some cleverly designed purses can also be converted into a backpack really easily, for example the Maestra bag by Senreve.

The quality
Kesha is absolutely right! An everyday handbag doesn't have to be outrageously expensive, because after all, the designers charge a lot for their brand names alone. What makes the investment worthwhile is a perfectly crafted piece made of high-quality materials featuring a sophisticated design. In my opinion, a handbag like this may cost between 100 and 500 euros as it has to go with everything and still look great even after years of use. Thinking about the cost per wear, it will be worth it because using a quality bag for years will save you money you would spend on ten of lesser quality. On the one hand, it’s essential to care for a bag in order for it to last long (I’m telling you all about how I maintain my leather bags here), and on the other hand, before even buying it, you might want to consider the following tips:
Material: I always recommend a well-crafted bag made of leather, however, there are high-quality vegan alternatives, for example if you look at Stella McCartney’s* pieces. Smooth or saffiano leather is robust, quite scratch-proof and long-lasting. Don’t make my mistake and stay away from suede at all costs! It does look very classy and elegant, yet it's pretty challenging to maintain and you mustn’t take it out in the rain.
Craftsmanship: When looking for well-made purses, pay attention to the crucial spots. Are the seams stitched with a strong thread and only show minimal puncture holes? Does the zipper run smoothly? Do critical components such as handles, loops and shoulder straps look sturdy or are they reinforced to support the bag’s weight? Make sure to examine your dream purse closely before buying it and definitely do some research on how the wear and tear will develop over time. Brand: Of course designer bags are exquisitely made and elevate any outfit. But would we lesser mortals carry them in everyday life? I do not baby my luxury bags, but in my routine I can’t be bothered to pay attention to where I place them, which weather they will have to endure and so on. My point is, you will find craftsmanship just as excellent as well as distinctive designs with brands in the middle segment which I call “premium brands” as opposed to luxury and high street.
