You put together a gorgeous outfit, selected your jewelry carefully, and matched the colors perfectly. But it’s freezing outside, so you have to put on a winter coat – and nobody will see your outfit. But don’t worry: as long as your winter coat is as beautiful as the rest of your outfit, you’ll be stylish through the cold season nonetheless! So here’s a guide to finding that perfect winter coat or jacket for your personal style and body type in terms of cut, color, style, materials and so on:
The length
Jacket or coat? Sure, it doesn’t hurt to have several options for the transitioning time out of fall when it's still a bit milder and the really cold winter time. If you only want to buy one thing, however, investing in a coat is the right choice, as it will keep you toasty warm even when the temperatures reach below zero.
In general, matching the coat length with your height is the right way to go. Why? For short people long coats may be just too much, whereas a shorter style, reaching just below the bum, will visually stretch their silhouette. If you are more on the tall side, knee or ankle length coats are your go-to style. Avoid short jackets as a tall person because they will add a few extra inches to your height.
The cut
Basically, every feature on a garment will catch the eye. This gives you many possibilities to play around with the style of your coat: opt for design details in places you want to draw attention to and avoid them to cover other areas. For example, ruffles and patch pockets create curves on a slim figure, and a belt emphasizes a feminine waist, which is flattering for all body types. If you want to draw attention away from the hips, you may want to look at coats with a broad lapel. The same works vice versa: if you have bigger boobs, go for details in the lower part of the jacket plus a v-neck. For those of you with a female figure, a loose-fitting a-line coat works as your outerwear of choice as it will shed the best light on your body type. The blazer cut is especially suitable for small women whereas voluminous cuts such as bomber jackets, oversize coats, or capes which should be at least hip length accentuate tall figures.

The color
First of all, your perfect coat should match your individual wardrobe. A neutral color always is worth investing in, so that you’ll be able to throw on your outerwear with as many outfits as possible. However, it depends entirely on your personal color scheme what “neutral” means to you. In addition to the classics like black, gray, and navy, lighter tones like white, cream, and of course the iconic camel coat are excellent shades for coats and jackets, because they blend well with all kinds of bags or shoes. And if you’re looking for something more OTT or you want to invest in a second or third coat, that’s reason enough to make a statement and choose an unusual color for your winter coat – maybe pink, baby blue, or turquoise? I mean, everyone can do black and gray ;)
The materials
When shopping for a coat, you may want to take a look at the label to find out what your favorite is made of. To keep snuggly warm in subzero temperatures, you can choose between wool, wool cashmere blends, faux fur, or functional materials. The lining plays an important role, too! Ask yourself which priorities you want to set: for example, a down puffer jacket will keep you warmer than a wool coat but maybe isn’t suitable for all occasions you need it for. Which material to get depends on where you live, how sensitive you are to the cold, how many layers you’re planning on wearing underneath, and so on. Personally, I own one thick winter jacket for the freezing winter days and several wool coats suitable for smarter occasions. It’s all in the mix!

The details
Okay, now that the cut, color, and materials are set, what else should your perfect coat have? Pockets are a must have, firstly for storing bits and bobs like gloves or your phone and secondly, for warming your hands! Plus, look for a coatloop to prevent your new garment from sliding to the ground from the overfilled coat rack at the next party. Buttons on the coat are obviously the classic way to close it and also a nice design detail; at the same time, a zipper is much quicker to do up. If there are any metals on the coat, check if you want to match them to the jewelry you’re wearing mostly or perhaps to the hardware on your favorite handbags. And of course a belt is always a good idea to add to your coat – if it doesn’t originally come with it – to accentuate your waist!
The style
Just like the color, the style of your perfect winter jacket should cater to your personal style and at the same time be super versatile. Regardless if you have your eyes on a parka, a trench, or a military style jacket – what matters is that you’ll be able to wear it to all kinds of occasions and with all kinds of outfits to make the most of the money you invested in your winter coat. Of course a classic a-line wool coat would be the holy grail of versatility, however, it doesn’t have to be plain and boring if you add some design details which represent your personal style. Or maybe there’s already the perfect coat for your individual sense of fashion: a puffer jacket for the sporty look, a trench coat for the casual chic, or a slouchy parka to rock the streetstyle.

Nur ist es draußen klirrend kalt, also musst du einen warmen Mantel darüber ziehen – und niemand wird das Outfit sehen. Aber alles kein Problem: Solange dein Wintermantel genauso umwerfend ist wie der Rest deines Looks, kommst du stilvoll durch die kalte Jahreszeit. Um den perfekten Mantel – oder die perfekte Jacke – für deinen persönlichen Stil und deinen Body-Type zu finden, kommt hier ein Guide zu Schnitten, Farben, Stil, Materialien und so weiter:
Die Länge
Jacke oder Mantel? Sicher macht es nichts, für den Übergang aus dem Herbst, wenn es noch etwas milder ist, und die richtig kalte Winterzeit mehrere Optionen zu haben. Wenn du nur eine Sachen kaufen möchtest, ist die Investition in einen Mantel die richtige Wahl, denn darin bist du auch für kältere Temperaturen gewappnet.
Als Faustregel gilt: orientiere dich mit der Mantellänge an deiner Körpergröße. Warum? Kleine Personen versinken schnell in langen Schnitten, wohingegen ein Kurzmantel, der auf den Oberschenkeln endet, optisch streckt. Bist du eher groß, kannst du knie- bis knöchellange Mäntel super tragen. Verzichte als groß gewachsene Person auf kurze Jacken – diese lassen dich noch ein paar Zentimeter länger wirken.
Der Schnitt – perfekt für deinen Body Type
Grundsätzlich gilt: Wo mehr passiert, geht der Blick hin. Mit Design-Details setzt du die Bereiche, die du am liebsten magst, in Szene oder kaschierst andere Zonen, indem du gezielt KEINE Aufmerksamkeit darauf lenkst. Volants und aufgesetzte Taschen zaubern beispielsweise bei einer schmalen Figur Kurven, ein Gürtel betont eine feminine Taille, die allen Body Types schmeichelt. Möchtest du den Blick nach oben und von der Hüfte weg lenken, greif zu einem Mantel mit breitem Revers. Gleiches gilt im Umkehrschluss: Bei großer Oberweite Details im unteren Bereich des Mantels wählen und auf einen V-Ausschnitt setzen. An weiblichen Body Types sieht ein locker über die Hüften fallender Mantel in A-Linie besonders vorteilhaft aus. Der Blazer-Schnitt ist besonders für kleine Frauen geeignet. Die Farbe
Zuerst mal muss dein perfekter Mantel zu deiner persönlichen Garderobe passen. Eine neutrale Farbe bietet sich immer an, damit die Außenbekleidung zu möglichst vielen Outfits passt. Was neutral für dich bedeutet, hängt ganz von der Farbpalette in deinem Schrank ab! Neben den Klassikern schwarz, grau und dunkelblau sind Weiß- und Cremetöne und selbstverständlich der klassische Camel Coat ausgezeichnete Farbnuancen für Mäntel und Jacken, denn sie harmonieren mit allen Taschen oder Schuhen. Und wenn es mal etwas mehr sein soll oder du in einen Zweit- oder Drittmantel investierst, darf ruhig tiefer in den Farbtopf gegriffen werden, denn von deinem Winteroutfit wird der Mantel oft als allererstes wahrgenommen. Grund genug also, damit ein Statement zu setzen und eine ungewöhnliche Farbe zu wählen – vielleicht rosa, hellblau oder sogar türkis? Schwarz und grau kann ja jeder. ;)
Die Materialien
Beim Mantelkauf solltest du immer einen Blick auf’s Etikett werfen und herausfinden, woraus dein Favorit gemacht ist. Um es in deinem Mantel im Winter kuschelig warm zu haben, hast du die Wahl zwischen Wolle, Woll-Kaschmir-Mischungen, Faux Fur oder Funktionsmaterialien. Das Futter spielt dabei ebenfalls eine wichtige Rolle. Hier ist die Frage, wo du deine Prioritäten setzt. Beispielsweise ist eine Daunenjacke wärmer als ein Wollmantel, ist aber vielleicht nicht für alle Anlässe geeignet. Bei der Materialwahl kommt es ganz darauf an, wo du lebst, wie kälteempfindlich du bist, ob du sowieso mehrere Schichten darunter trägst und so weiter. Ich persönlich besitze eine richtig dicke Winterjacke für die Minustemperaturen im tiefsten Schnee und mehrere Mäntel aus Wolle, die für smartere Anlässe geeignet sind. Die Mischung macht’s!

Die Details
Okay, du hast dich für Schnitt, Farbe und Material entschieden. Was sollte dein Mantel noch haben? Taschen sind ein Must-have, sei es um Kleinigkeiten wie Handschuhe oder das Handy greifbar zu haben oder auch um die Hände darin zu vergraben und zu wärmen. Praktisch ist auch ein Aufhänger – beim Besuch im Café oder der nächsten Party lässt sich damit leicht vermeiden, dass die Jacke auf dem Boden landet. Knöpfe sind der Klassiker am Mantel und veredeln den Look, gleichzeitig lässt sich ein Reißverschluss schneller schließen. Bei der Hardware, also dem Metall an Zippern und Co., lohnt sich ein Abgleich damit, welchen Schmuck du üblicherweise trägst oder auch mit der Farbe der Hardware an deinen Lieblingstaschen. Außerdem kannst du dir überlegen, ob ein Gürtel – der nicht unbedingt beim Mantel dabei sein muss – zu deiner neuen Außenbekleidung passt und deine Figur zusätzlich betonen soll.
Der Stil
Ähnlich wie die Farbe sollte der Stil deiner perfekten Winterjacke die Balance zwischen deinem persönlichen Geschmack und Vielseitigkeit halten. Ob Parka, Trenchcoat, Daunenjacke oder ein Mantel im Military-Style – wichtig ist, dass du ihn zu möglichst vielen Gelegenheiten und mit möglichst vielen verschiedenen Outfits tragen kannst, denn dann lohnt sich die Investition. Ideal dafür ist natürlich ein klassischer Wollmantel in A-Linie, der aber nicht langweilig sein muss, wenn du mit wenigen Akzenten ein Modell findest, das deinem persönlichen Stil entspricht. Manche Styles passen hingegen perfekt in gewisse Stilrichtungen: ein Puffer Jacket zum sportlichen Look, Trenchcoats zu androgyn-coolen Outfits oder der lässige Parka zum rockigen Streetstyle.
