With cold weather rushing towards us, we face the style challenge of keeping warm while looking chic which is particularly difficult because people don’t really see your outfit when you’re covered in three layers of coziness. I don’t know about you, but I’m not ready to sacrifice neither fashion nor warmth as long as the temperatures are somewhat in a reasonable range, so that’s why I compiled 5 tips on how to stay toasty and look stylish at the same time with the few parts of your look that are visible:
1. Love at frost sight: Dress for the season
First and foremost, the key to chic winter dressing is wearing season-appropriate attire. It’s just weird if you show up in spring dresses when it’s freezing outside, even though they might be more stylish than winter coats. However, with the right items, winter style can be fun. So bring out these chunky knits, leather leggings, and wool skirts!
2. Monochrome madness: Tonal dressing
Keeping your whole look in the same color palette will always come across as elegant and somehow exclusive and can save your look when all that is on show is your coat. And there’s more to it than that: tonal dressing, which means combining shades from the same color family, is one big fat trend for the winter season in 2019/2020. I recommend going for a neutral in your wardrobe when in comes to tonal dressing as it doesn’t make sense to invest in several garments in vibrant colors, except when that’s the look you want to go for. Your neutrals depend on your personal style and can be anything from white and cream to brown and black.
3. It’s what’s inside that counts: Thermals are your best friends
To avoid looking like the Michelin man himself, don’t rely on bulky coats and jackets for warmth, but stay toasty on the inside by layering thermal tops and tights under what you’d normally wear. It’s a nice way to streamline your silhouette and maybe show a little bit more of your outfit as you don’t have to cover up with large outerwear.
4. The snuggle is real: Shine with your outerwear
This is a no-brainer: your coat or jacket is one piece of your outfit that people will notice first and that you will wear most often throughout winter. Hence, it has to be warm and chic at the same time, flatter your figure, and complement your own personal style. Therefore I highly recommend opting for an investment piece. “Investment” doesn’t necessarily equal breaking the bank or buying from a designer brand. There are premium high street brands, for example Ted Baker, or even high street brands like & other stories or River Island that do winter coats perfectly. Pay attention to the materials – you may want your ideal coat to be made of wool and/or cashmere –, a flattering cut for your body type, and high-quality workmanship, for example the way the stitching is done or if the buttons look cheap. If you invest in the right piece of outerwear, you can be sure to be wearing it for years and years to come and minimize the cost per wear.
5. Handbags speak louder than words: Show off your favorite accessories
This tip obviously doesn’t help you staying warm, however, it’s my favorite fashion advice to follow when I want to find a way to upgrade an outfit. As people mostly see your outerwear in winter, add some accessories that will be visible for sure. When you think about it, you won’t notice necklaces or bracelets on someone during the colder season as those pieces of jewelry are covered up, so instead wear some statement earrings or a trendy headband (if you’re not having a hat on, that is). A handbag that catches the eye is always a good idea, and of course you can put a spotlight on your favorite winter booties. Put on a pair of sunglasses for instant coolness, and you’re good to go!

Mit dem kalten Wetter im Anmarsch stehen wir wieder vor der Style-Herausforderung, es schön warm zu haben und gleichzeitig stilvoll auszusehen – wenn man unser Outfit unter drei Schichten Behaglichkeit überhaupt sieht. Ich weiß nicht, wie es dir geht, aber ich bin nicht bereit, weder Mode noch Wärme aufzugeben, solange sich die Temperaturen noch in einem einigermaßen vernünftigen Bereich bewegen. Aus diesem Grund habe ich 5 Tipps zusammengestellt, wie du ein warmes und zur selben Zeit elegantes Outfit zusammenstellst, obwohl davon nur wenig sichtbar ist:
1. Winterfreude: Das Outfit sollte zur Jahreszeit passen
Die Grundlage für Winter-Looks ist auf jeden Fall, sich der Jahreszeit entsprechend anzuziehen. Es ist einfach komisch, bei niedrigen Temperaturen in frühlingshaften Klamotten herumzulaufen, auch wenn die vielleicht schicker sind als Wintermäntel. Mit den richtigen Pieces wird dein Winter-Style aber genauso wunderbar. Also: raus mit den kuscheligen Pullis, Lederleggings und Wollröcken!
2. Kein Einheitsbrei: Ton in Ton Looks liegen im Trend
Outfits im gleichen Farbschema wirken immer elegant und irgendwie exklusiv und retten deinen Look, wenn der eigentlich nur aus einem Mantel besteht. Und das ist noch nicht alles: “Tonal Dressing”, das bedeutet Ton in Ton-Looks, liegen für den Winter 2019/2020 super im Trend. Eine neutrale Farbe aus deinem Kleiderschrank eignet sich besonders für das Tonal Dressing, denn in einen Komplettlook in einer Knallfarbe zu investieren, ist nicht besonders sinnvoll (außer natürlich das ist total dein Stil). Welche neutralen Töne du wählst, hängt auch stark von den Farben in deiner Garderobe ab – von weiß und creme bis hin zu braun und schwarz ist alles möglich.
3. Die inneren Werte zählen: Thermo-Wear ist dein bester Freund
Der Look des Michelin-Männchens ist nicht besonders schmeichelhaft, aber neben voluminösen Mänteln oder Jacken gibt es noch einen anderen Weg, bei Minusgraden nicht zu frieren: Thermo-Wear. Die Shirts oder auch Strumpfhosen werden einfach unter deinen normalen Look gelayert und halten schön warm. Der nette Nebeneffekt: Die Silhouette deiner Outfits ist viel besser sichtbar, da nichts durch weite Mäntel verdeckt wird.
4. Kuschel dich rein: Der Mantel steht im Rampenlicht
Das liegt auf der Hand: dein Mantel oder deine Jacke ist der Bestandteil deines Winter-Outfits, der zuerst bemerkt wird und den du während der Saison am meisten trägst. Es sollte als warm und gleichzeitig schick sein, deiner Figur schmeicheln und deinen individuellen Stil perfekt ergänzen. Deshalb lege ich dir ans Herz, für deinen Wintermantel ein Investment Piece herauszusuchen. Investition bedeutet nicht unbedingt, dass du dafür dein letztes Hemd verkaufen oder eine Designer-Marke wählen musst. Es gibt viele tolle Premium-Läden wie zum Beispiel Ted Baker oder auch gängige Modeketten wie & other stories oder River Island, die hochwertige Wintermäntel im Angebot haben. Achte auf die Materialien – idealerweise ist dein Lieblingsmantel aus Wolle und/oder Kaschmir –, einen Schnitt, der dir steht, und eine hochwertige Verarbeitung. Die kannst du unter anderem an den Nähten oder an der Qualität der Knöpfe ablesen. Und wenn du in den richtigen Mantel investierst, wirst du ihn sicher viele kommende Jahre tragen und so die Kosten pro Anziehen minimieren.
5. Mit den richtigen Schuhen kannst du die Welt erobern: Zeige deine Lieblings-Accessoires
Dieser Tipp hilft dir natürlich nicht, dich warm zu halten, aber um ein Outfit aufzuwerten, schwöre ich darauf. Weil meistens nur deine Jacke sichtbar ist, stell sicher, dass du dazu Accessoires trägst, die nicht darunter verschwinden, wie beispielsweise Ketten und Armbänder. Ein Paar Statement-Ohrringe oder ein trendiger Haarreif sind die bessere Wahl in der kalten Jahreszeit – selbstverständlich nur, wenn du keine Mütze aufsetzt. Eine Eyecatcher-Handtasche ist immer eine gute Idee, und klar kannst du auch deine liebsten Winterstiefeletten in den Fokus rücken. Eine Sonnenbrille verspricht im Handumdrehen einen coolen Touch, und schon bist du fertig!
